QUICK READ: Stop procrastinating and take back control of your time (and life!).

Parkinsons law states that- work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion (regardless of the amount of work to be done).

I think we can ALL relate to this.

We have all had days where we have a million and one things to do and we somehow power through and accomplish it all. AND we have had those days where we have just one thing to get done and somehow that one thing expands to fill the whole day.

Here are some tried and true tricks to beat this sneaky little phenomenon.

  1. Use a timer. Give yourself 10 minutes to draft and send an email to your boss.

  2. Schedule something fun. If you have “all day” to get the house cleaned, give yourself until noon and then schedule a lunch date with a friend.

  3. Move up your deadline. If your paper is due at midnight, give yourself a deadline of noon.

  4. Manipulate your environment. Work without your phone charger to limit accessibility after hours.

  5. Block time for activities. Write out your daily tasks and block time frames for each task. (Don’t forget to include rest and refuel!)

  6. Give yourself some grace.  Remind yourself of everything you have already accomplished.

Remember, you are not alone; and there is no one tried and true time management method that works best for everyone! Don’t be afraid to experiment. Find what works best for you.

If you are struggling with procrastination or time management and are curious about optimizing your time (and your life), don’t hesitate to reach out!
