What if you could just Be YOU?

Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to just be fully you - to fully embrace your own unique needs, interests, and quirks?
We live in a time in which we respond to expectations/demands, and cater to the needs of our jobs/families/friends/you-name-it! It is totally normal to highlight different strengths of ours in different situations. AND it can be exhausting and overwhelming to present as the person you think you should be.
What if you could just be you? What if that niggling “flaw” or passion is the best part of you?
Research by Harvard Business Review found that catering to others’ needs and expectations is “much less effective than being yourself.” (Read more here: https://hbr.org/2020/02/research-it-pays-to-be-yourself.)
Why?
Yes, filtering is necessary to remain appropriate to your target audience. And, let’s be real, we need to present differently at our workplace than we present in our PJ’s, pre-coffee, first thing in the morning. BUT we are not doing ourselves any favors by minimizing our own interests/values in favor of our perception of others’ interests. Not only is hiding our true/authentic selves cognitively draining, but it also increases our anxiety and is emotionally draining.
Put simply, “Being yourself makes a better impression than catering to another person’s interests and expectations. It not only feels better; it also improves the likelihood that you will achieve your goal.”
I get it. It can be CHALLENGING to put yourself out there. It is a unique and vulnerable place to be. And yet, being authentically you might just yield the best results yet.
My goal for this year is to embrace the quirks.
